Happily, there are good facilities for the disabled at all the terminals of the international airports in the Canaries. Playa de las Americas, Los Cristianos and Puerto de la Cruz have several wheelchair friendly hotels and more are being built. Although not quite in line with the UK Tenerife has - over the last several years - made a concerted effort to provide the disabled visitor with the facilities and equipment needed to enjoy a carefree and independent holiday. The British based Royal association for Disability and rehabilitation (RADAR), publish a guide called 'Holidays & Travel Abroad: A Guide for Disabled People'. It includes info on Spain and the Canary Islands with plenty of contact details. (Tel: 0171 250 3222). If you are not accompanied by someone who can carry your luggage for you, please inform the airport's handicap service team, so that you can be helped. We remind you that this is an airport service which is free of charge. The free transportation of handicapped passengers inside the airport has been settled by European Law. Tenerife Airport TransfersPlease be aware that all airport transfers in Tenerife have to be pre booked. There are people who will approach you upon your arrival to Tenerife, offering you cheap transfers to your holiday resort. This is ILLEGAL and you run the risk of travelling in uninsured vehicles with inexperienced drivers. This will invalidate your holiday insurance and further more put yourself, your family and friends at great risk. If you arrive in Tenerife without an airport transfer pre booked you are advised to use the airport taxi service. If you ask they will supply you with a mobility adapted vehicle, however you must be prepared to wait until one becomes available. What is the disabled parking blue badge scheme? The disabled blue formerly (orange) badge scheme is a national scheme for people who:
The scheme provides a wide range of parking benefits. For example the scheme enables badge holders to park free in most pay and display car parks and also to park on single and double yellow lines in most streets for up to three hours (where it will not cause an obstruction or endanger other road users or pedestrians). All European Community countries use a standardised blue disabled badge. This makes it easier for disabled people living in the UK to use the disabled parking schemes in other European countries. If you have any useful information to others please email it to us and we will include it on our website. If you don't want us to publish your name please tell us in the email.
